Two teenagers are in police custody after a high-speed joyride on the wrong side of Melbourne freeways sparked more than 60 emergency calls from the public.
A police spokeswoman said the pair’s Boxing Day escapade ended in a crash in Melbourne’s CBD before both 17-year-old males were arrested nearby.
Police said they first became aware of the teenage joyriders when the force’s air wing spotted a stolen white Nissan Juke SUV driving erratically in the Essendon area, shortly after 5pm.
“The police helicopter monitored the vehicle for about three hours and guided a coordinated police ground response as it travelled across much of the metropolitan Melbourne area,” they said.
“On a number of occasions, the vehicle allegedly drove into oncoming traffic on several freeways at high speeds.
