NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed only eight positive cases have been identified out of more than 44,000 tests.
Ms Berejiklian said the huge number “is a record we did not expect” and that she feels “proud and deeply grateful” for Sydney’s response.
Overnight there were eight cases of community transmission identified, seven of which were linked to the Avalon cluster.
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said the case eighth case that remains under investigation is a health care worker from western Sydney who was involved in the transfer of patients from the international airport. They transported a symptomatic family of three from the airport on December 14.
