A major search and rescue operation is under way to find a man who went missing during a midnight swim with friends near Gympie overnight.

Police say the 20-year-old had been in waist deep water, lit with headlights near the group’s camp ground along the Mary River, when the rest of the group noticed he was gone.

Three swift water rescue crews were called to the scene at the corner of Traveston Cross and Dobson roads in Kybong but could not locate the man, police said in a statement.

“Police are continuing their search today, assisted by divers and State Emergency Service personnel who are scouring the area.”

Property owners in the area have been urged to watch for the man and anyone with further information is asked to contact police.

The man was described as caucasian with a medium build, olive skin and dark hair. He was last seen wearing dark shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.
