Twelve months ago, Sydney rang in 2020 with huge crowds lining vantage points along the harbour to watch a multimillion-dollar fireworks display at midnight.
It was a familiar scene, repeated every year. But not tonight.
This year stands in stark contrast, with millions of Sydneysiders urged to watch the seven-minute fireworks display from home as the harbour city battles a series of coronavirus clusters.
Photographers from the Sydney Morning Herald hit the top spots across the city – usually well and truly at capacity for hours before the display – to see how they looked, compared with years gone by.
