A man arrested over the death of Ballarat woman Kobie Parfitt has faced court after being charged with her murder more than six months after the mother of four vanished from her home.

Wendouree man Brendon Prestage, 31, was arrested about 5.45pm on Tuesday in Kinglake with assistance from members of the critical incident response ream and appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with a single count of murder following a lengthy homicide squad investigation into the death of Ms Parfitt, which police alleged occurred in April.

Dressed in a black singlet, with a bushy beard and long hair tied back in a bun, Mr Prestage sat silently throughout the brief hearing, only speaking to acknowledge he understood the proceedings.

Remains that police believe belong to Ms Parfitt were found at the bottom of a mineshaft at Snake Valley last week after the 43-year-old vanished from a home on Hickman Street in Ballarat on April 28.
