A 71-year-old man is in critical condition in hospital after a teenager allegedly broke into his Brisbane unit and beat him relentlessly on Tuesday.

Police said the accused forced his way into the victim’s unit in the complex at 17 Allworth Street in Northgate, in Brisbane’s north-east, about 7pm.

It will be alleged he then attacked the 71-year-old male resident, punching him multiple times in the head and body, before fleeing the scene.

Police responded to the incident and arrested the teenager at another unit within the same complex.

The victim suffered severe head injuries and was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition.

The 18-year-old man, who lives in Caboolture, has been charged with grievous bodily harm and entering a dwelling with intent. He is due to face the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Investigations are ongoing.
