He said Mr McKee held the gun to their heads before he heard “metal on metal”. He said he woke up with “blood all over my eye” believing he’d been shot, but was later told he had been punched in the face with knuckledusters.

Jett McKee died at Forest Lodge in August 2018.

Mr Davis said he then heard Ms Quinn screaming from the street and “grabbed the first thing I could” as he ran out the door, which was a samurai sword “right next to my front door”.

He said he found Mr McKee and Ms Quinn in a “tussle or a wrestle”.

“I know that I hit him with the sword and I know that I did that to save Hannah,” he said.

Asked how he felt knowing that his action ended a man’s life, he said through tears: “Horrible. Horrible. No other word for it.

“I didn’t mean to take a life away. It’s something I will have to live with forever. I just wanted to save her.”

“Did you intend to kill him?” Ms Cunneen asked.

“No, not at all. I just wanted to save … Hannah,” he said.

Mr Davis told the court the injuries he sustained on the day resulted in him “swallowing blood” for days and he is now unable to read out of his left eye.

Crown prosecutor Chris Taylor put it to Mr Davis he was “lying through his teeth” in his evidence, a suggestion he rejected.

The court has heard police found 122.1 grams of cannabis at Mr Davis’ home, an amount under the trafficable quantity. He told the court this was for personal use.

Asked if “you were making money from drug dealing”, Mr Davis said: “On some occasions, yes.” He said Ms Quinn would sell cannabis for $20 a gram.

Mr Davis agreed he would regularly have cannabis and cash at his home but insisted the drugs found by police was “my personal cannabis”.

He rejected Mr Taylor’s suggestion that one of the reasons why he had swords on display was so that people selling him drugs would “know not to mess with Blake Davis”.

He denied he selected the “sharpest and heaviest and longest sword” and said he was “endeavouring to help my girlfriend”.

The trial continues.
