Authorities are tracking a five-metre white shark heading east along the coast near North Cottesloe Beach.

Surf Life Saving WA closed the beach on Friday morning after the shark was spotted 300 metre off shore by the Surf Life Saving helicopter around 9.30am.

It followed a tagged tiger shark being detected on multiple occasions overnight between Scarborough and Leighton beaches.

“It is possible that these sightings and detections may increase the likelihood of encountering a shark in this area,” a SharkSmart alert said.
