Everest winner Classique Legend made no show on his Hong Kong debut in the group 1 International Sprint at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon, the A$3.7 million race going to English jockey Ryan Moore aboard the Japanese raider Danon Smash.
The former Les Bridge-trained gelding Classique Legend was slowly away from barrier one and snagged to the back of the field soon after the start. Although he met some interference in running he was never close enough to ever look like landing a blow and beat only two home.
The Japanese galloper pounced to beat local horses Jolly Banner and Rattan, the last named ridden by the now Hong Kong based but former Melbourne and Sydney champion apprentice Chad Schofield, who won the 2013 Cox Plate aboard Shamus Award.
None of the fancied runners made the frame, the favourite Hot King Prawn and the third choice Computer Patch finishing unplaced.
